Polartec® started developing performance flame resistant fabric technologies for the U.S. Military in 2003 after combat uniforms began melting against the intense heat of IED detonations. This necessity to enhance safety abilities of fabrics used to protect against worksite hazards became a practical fit for commercial workwear applications. Today they continue to develop innovative permanent flame resistant yarn technologies used to create protective layering systems that perform in the most demanding work environments.

Polartec® Power Dry® FR was created to give flame resistant base fabrics greater efficiency and more dependable wicking properties. Chemical fabric treatments can only provide temporary wicking because the ability fades and weakens with every wash. By designing patented mechanical wicking properties into our bi-component construction we invented a superior base material that pulls moisture from the skin, expands for faster evaporation and lasts the life of the fabric.

The technology used to control moisture is the highest priority for next-to-skin surfaces. Sweat and moisture vapor must be in a constant state of flux to ensure the fabric doesn’t become saturated and lose performance characteristics.  This is why Polartec® Power Dry® FR is engineered with thier patented bi-component knit construction to enhance drying capabilities across the fabric structure. This dual surface approach maximizes performance by mechanically wicking sweat and vapor off your skin and directly transferring it to the outer surface where it diffuses for quick dry times.

Open air channels surrounding each individual segment of grid allow Polartec® Power Grid™ to easily release all excess body heat as it builds during activity. These breathable air channels create space for greater compression capabilities when needing to pack or store materials with limited room.

General care Next-to-Skin Fabrics

  • Every single Polartec® fabric can be machine-washed cold and line dried
  • 100% polyester: Machine wash warm (105F, 40C), tumble dry low. Blends of polyester, nylon, polypropylene, wool, and/or spandex, or where garment care instructions indicate: Cold wash (85F, 30C), line dry.
  • Next-to-Skin fabrics Polartec® Power Dry® and Polartec® Power Stretch® rely upon mechanical wicking to pull moisture away from the skin. Using too much detergent in the wash cycle or fabric softener in the dry cycle can inhibit the wicking action. Be sure to use light detergent that rinses completely clean and avoid fabric softeners for these fabrics.
